Saint Lucia,
Solstice Bride
The Sixth Story of The Christmas Cycle
Saint Lucia, Solstice Bride was first presented in 2002 at Scandinavia House in New York City, and the following year as part of the Solstice celebration of All Saints Episcopal Church in Burlington, Vermont.
Taking place around 1000 CE, it is the story of a young girl living on the shore of Lake Vänern, the largest body of water in Sweden, who is trying to save her family and her people from starvation. In answer to her prayers, a beautiful woman in white steps into their lives on the longest night of the year with a miracle.
Saint Lucia, Solstice Bride is also a ‘keyhole story’—one in which the ancestral past before Christianity rises up into the images of the story to present an expanded depth of presence and a sacred relationship to the natural world.
A pre-talk with images and discussion precedes the story describing the relationship of the Christmas season to the calendar of the natural world in the northern hemisphere, a time when the Earth is dreaming and a great opportunity for deepening as a human being is present. A discussion of Saint Lucia’s origins and expansion is also included.
